This is an excellent book written by a physician who collaborated with A. W. Spalding for a five-book series on marriage and raising children.
This was written in collaboration with A. W. Spalding and is excellent.
This series of 12 booklets on raising children was published by the Educational Department of the church in, and used by churches and home school associations to study parenting. Much of it is excellent and provides much helpful instruction. Speaking of the success of the program, in 1928 there were 3,000 mothers and hundreds of fathers studying the booklets together. This was published many years ago, with norms that were far different from today. Though the norms are different, the principle deliniated within are still very helpful. Read with discretion. We don't agree with every word written, but you should have the opportunity to read for yourself.
Ellen White strongly advocated a gentle approach, warning that agressive discipline usually brings even worse behavior; whereas a gentle approach brings better results. Compare what you read here to what you find in the booklet on Ellen White's approach to discipline. Today they would not accept everything that was advocated back then. In posting this we are not advocating every word either. But there is lots that is very helpful!
Some of the information given relative to health is dated. However the principles for teaching habits of health are not dated and are helpful.
She was the wife of J. H. Kellogg. The book is considered quite good on the subject. A Mrs. Haskell had donated significant funds for some special project. The project ended up being the Haskell Home for Orphans. As a result Ella developed a two-year training course that was used to prepare the staff that worked there. Many individuals requested it be put into book form, which resulted in Studies in Character Building. They were Adventist when the work first went on, but later left the church. The Home had a fire three times. One of the times three children lost their lives.
This is a wonderful book on working with Junior-aged children. This link goes to the book, which is posted with permission on the blog at Young Disciple
We are blessed with an ocean of written information in the Adventist Church. Unfortunately many of our members are unaware of how much is available. On this page I try to provide some of those resources. You will find books of Marion Cady, an educator that wrote on nature and the Bible and the Hebrew way of education. Alma McKibben wrote True Education readers, as did Sarah Peck. A. W. Spalding also wrote much on family. At the True Education Readers Page Link you will find some of the books of these authors.

My Bible First produces wonderful resources to help parents and churches capture the interest of children and youth, help these young people give their hearts to Jesus, and help them learn to love and know the Bible. Age-appropriate curriculum is available for every age group, starting with children under 3. Helpful teacher resources have also been developed at a relatively low cost. Our family loves My Bible First materials, including their song books (individual songs with artwork in a flip book) and their Picture books.
These are a great resource for family worship. Each song comes in a "flip book" that you turn as you go through the verses. The photographs are wonderful!
The pictures we use go with the lessons being studied. There are anywhere from two to four of them, perhaps more. The beautiful 8x11 full-color pictures illustrate the lessons. There are other pictures as well.
The lessons have been translated into many languages!

Mrs. Edwards (1904-1993) was a highly popular, prolific author and enthusiastic storyteller who traveled extensively in Europe and the United States, sometimes traveling every week of the year, sharing her character-building stories. She also authored more than thirty-four books. These stories were recorded at the Michigan Conference Camp Meeting.
"There are many who have not books and publications upon present truth. Here is a large field where money can be safely invested. There are large numbers of little ones who should be supplied with reading. The Sunshine Series, Golden Grains Series, Poems, Sabbath Readings, etc., are all precious books and may be introduced safely into every family. The many trifles usually spent on candies and useless toys may be treasured up with which to buy these volumes...." Ellen White, Adventist Home, 479.2.
These books are wonderful!!!!!! Expensive to buy, but worth it. They can be "borrowed" online at the Internet Archive for an hour at a time. You can't download the books, but you can read them online.
This collection would include the Bedtime Stories, the Children's Hour and the Bible Story Books. You can find many of his books to "borrow" online through the Internet Archive. The time they are available is limited, but it allows access all over the world.
The Ladder of Life series, a set of eight books developed by a large committee of individuals who were highly skilled in working with children, provides children with simple illustrations of spiritual truths and maxims. The teachings are wonderful, the artwork is wonderful, and children easily understand what is being communicated. This is highly recommended. At the present time used copies can sometimes be found. Teach Services will soon be publishing them again.
The books of A. W. Spalding are wonderful. He wrote some to be read to children, some about raising children, and many books for adults on the history of the Adventist Church. He wrote thirty books, as well as hundreds of articles. Click on the link to find some of these resources.
The Bible year was a book on reading through the stories of the Bible with commentary.
The following books have wonderful illustrations. Two have been uploaded to the internet so far.
Joseph Bates was the "Father" of Adventism in so many ways, and was the early adopter of much of what we believe—opposed slavery and was willing to risk his life to share the good news with them; adopted vegetarianism before everyone else, etc. You must read a biography of his life.
This autobiography of James White shares wonderful stories from his life. I especially enjoy the portions on his early life and how he became inebriated with learning. Parts of this biography should be "must-reading" for our members.
David Paulson was a greatly blessed man of God who obediently followed the leadings of God, regardless of the personal cost. His name is well known from the "Paulson Collection" of documents on the White Estate website. You and your children will love this autobiography. This would also be an excellent book to read and discuss in an academy Bible class or church group.
This book, published in 1912 by our own publishing houses, is still available through the ABC store, and has stories of many non-SDA missionaries.
Minnie was an amazing Adventist woman who found opportunities to witness wherever she found herself. This is a rare, unpublished autobiography that Rose and I discovered, were blessed in reading, and have been happily sharing with others since.
This book is filled with stories of young people who were willing to suffer hardship—even death—in serving God.
(The Link is to the Internet Archive, where the book can be downloaded. The file is around 150 MB.)
Drawn from Mrs. White's personal scrapbook of stories, a series of twenty children's story books were published starting in 1875. Four of them are available at the Adventist Digital Library. You can also download them here:
Golden Grain Book 1 The Hard Way
Golden Grain Book 2 Annie's Savings Box
Golden Grain Book 3 Grumbling Tommy
Golden Grain Book ? The School-Boys Dinner
Emma Thompson Anderson was a pioneer Adventist missionary to China, author, bookkeeper, Bible worker, and educator. She, along with her husband, Jacob, and sister, Ida Thompson, were the first group of official missionaries to China in 1902. The two books detail their work in China.
There are many PDFs of mission stories here. This is not an SDA site but you will find many resources here.
You will find pdfs of many favorite stories.
There is a variety of audio and written stories for kids.
You will enjoy reading the stories that helped children develop characters in the past.
"The biography of the righteous is among the best treasures that the church can possess. ... This rich experience is bequeathed to us as a legacy of great value." Ellen White, Manuscript 38, 1887, par. 1.
On this page you will find a long list of biographies that you can enjoy as a family.
These books are appropriate to read to your children and teens.
Elizabeth Elliot wrote a book on the same subject matter, but I prefer this one. Here you will learn about how God brought Adoniram Judson and his wife together, the story of Hudson Taylor and Maria, etc, etc. Wonderful, inspiring, and instructive stories.
Jonathan and Rosalind Goforth served in China with the Presbyterian Mission. Among the many accomplishments are his witnessing while he was a student at Knox College in Toronto, his decision to marry Rosalind, God giving him the gift of the Chinese language, conducting many revivals, etc. There are mentions in this book of Sunday School and attending church on Sunday. When I read it to children, I use a different word.

This little book is full of instructive stories of answered prayer. After reading this book, also read the book she wrote on her husband's ministry: Goforth of China. This book will have mentions of Sunday school and going to church on Sunday.
David Livingstone opened the African Continent in the 1800s. Numerous books have been written on his life. This is a shorter one for young people.
This is a smaller book by Arthur Anderson, published by the Pacific Press.
George Müller operated an orphanage in Bristol England, where he eventually constructed five buildings that could provide shelter to 2,000 children. Instead of asking for money, he chose to only ask Go for money. You learn about how to live by faith in reading his story.
John Paton served in what is now known as Vanuatu among the cannibals [people who ate humans] who were present there. There is plenty of excitement to be had for all.
C.T. also served in China with Hudson Taylor's China Inland Mission. Prior to going to China, he was known as one of the best cricket players in all of England. He renounced the sport to go to China. He also joined other young adults. One of the most noteworthy stories is when he gave most of his portion of the family inheritance to the mission. He gave the remaining, ungiven portion prior to his getting married, at the urging of his soon-to-be wife.
Taylor is one of the most spiritual missionaries I am aware of. Converted as a teenager in answer to his mother's prayers, he dedicated himself to God, asked for a field, and distinctly heard God say that he had been called to open a mission in China. He went and began serving. Eventually, hundreds of missionaries joined him in China and did a wonderful work. Both books are wonderful. The first is his autobiography, the second was written by one of his daughters, and shares the secret of how he began walking with God. Good stuff!!!
Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret
This was a favorite book of my Dad's when he was growing up in Switzerland. I think you will be blessed reading it as well.
