God's Will

Bible Verse

Matthew 6:10 (NKJV) "Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

"O how many lose the richest blessings that God has in store for them in health and spiritual endowments! There are many souls who wrestle for special victories and special blessings that they may do some great thing. To this end they are always feeling that they must make an agonizing struggle in prayer and tears. When these persons search the Scriptures with prayer to know the expressed will of God and then do His will from the heart, without one reservation or self-indulgence, they will find rest. All the agonizing, all the tears and struggles will not bring them the blessing they long for. Self must be entirely surrendered. They must do the work that presents itself, appropriating the abundance of the grace of God which is promised to all who ask in faith."

Introduction

Learning how to determine God's will is one of the more important lessons in obtaining answers to prayer and experiencing God's blessings in the Christian life. Over the past ten years I have studied much on the subject and led many sessions on this important topic. During that time I have learned that God has a plan for each one of our lives, is willing to communicate that plan, is willing to help us achieve that plan and will help us to accordingly experience wonderful blessings that result from following God's plan. However, I have also learned that many do not feel they know how to ascertain God's plan for their lives. Accordingly, this will be an important and instructive section of the discipleheart.com website.

What Does the Bible Say About Discovering And Doing God's Will?

1. God's Plan is Perfect

God wants His will to be perfectly accomplished in our lives:

Colossians 4:12 “That ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.”

2. Jesus Always did His Father's Will

John 4:34 “My meat is to do the will of Him who sent me.”

John 5:30 “I seek not my own will, but the will of Him who sent me.”

3. God Will Give Wisdom

James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

Psalm 32: 8: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.”

4. True and Enduring Happiness Comes Doing God's Will

Prov. 16:20 “He who heeds the word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the LORD, happy is he.”

John 13:17 “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

Ps. 34:8 “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”

Ps. 119:1,2 “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart!”

Ps. 128:1 “Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways.”

Rev. 22:14 “Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.”

5. Unreserved Surrender is Needed

We must be completely open to whatever God wants. To do so, it is best to have no will of our own on the matter:

Luke 9:23 "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me."

6. God Always Leads According to the Bible

Isaiah 8:20: “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” 7. God will providentially direct us by opening and closing doors:

Proverbs 3:6: “In all you ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”

8. God Prepares and Directs

We may not understand all the steps, but God will both prepare and direct us for whatever He has in mind—like He did for Daniel who didn't always understand what was going on:

2 Sam. 22:33 “God is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect.

Heb. 13:20-21 “Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

9. His Peace Will Rule.

When God is leading, His peace will rule in our hearts. Lack of peace is an important indicator that what we are pursuing may not be God's will, or that it is not yet God’s time:

Col. 3:15: “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.”

10. Seek Counsel

It is often wise to share God’s leadings with a mature and surrendered Christian, to ascertain if we are correctly understanding God's leading:

Proverbs 11:14 “In the multitude of counselors there is safety.”

11. He Leads One Step at a Time

Isa. 30:21 “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it, whenever you turn to the right hand whenever you turn to the left.”

12. Seek Confirmation Through a fleece.

Judges 6:37 “Look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said.”
