Trust God; Put Your Talents Into the Work!

James 1:5 (NKJV) "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

"It is not the capabilities you now possess or ever will have that will give you success. It is that which the Lord can do for you."

A friend who I esteemed greatly in my life was Stanley Hill, better known as "Uncle Dan" of Your Story Hour—the original "Uncle Dan" that began the ministry with others. He would call me to pray and talk about what was going on in the ministry and his life. Along the way he also told me stories of how the ministry began, and how God answered prayers. He was the "real deal" if I can put it that way. The following quote was the quote God used to launch Your Story Hour. At the time he had a family and he was working as a foreman at the College Wood Products. But an invitation had come to produce a radio program. But what could he do? He had no experience and he had to support his family. The wife of the script writer showed him the following quote to encourage him that his lack of experience did not stand in the way of God working:

"You need not go to the ends of the earth for wisdom, for God is near. It is not the capabilities you now possess or ever will have that will give you success. It is that which the Lord can do for you. We need to have far less confidence in what man can do and far more confidence in what God can do for every believing soul. He longs to have you reach after Him by faith. He longs to have you expect great things from Him. He longs to give you understanding in temporal as well as in spiritual matters. He can sharpen the intellect. He can give tact and skill. Put your talents into the work, ask God for wisdom, and it will be given you." {COL 146.4}

Stanley made everything a matter of prayer, be it getting his refrigerator to work, or praying about financial needs,— one time being assured at the end of his prayer that $100,000 would be coming to the ministry by the end of the month. He called me that morning to share with me what God had told him. By the end of the month a little more than $100,000 had come to the ministry. This came close to the end of his life. It seemed to be God assuring Stanley that His Father had the means and the wherewithal to keep Your Story Hour going. That happened many years ago and Your Story Hour continues to change lives throughout the globe. I pray that we will all put our talents into God's work asking God for His wisdom to do His work His way, so that He can also bless it!
